2015 - Celebrating 5 Years Home

JM and Maggie in Newport, RI

Maggie and JM exploring The Breakers Mansion, Newport, RI

This week we celebrated 5 years with JM! Each day this week we told him about our journey to travel - from the time Keith and I left the Philadelphia airport, to meeting him for the first time, to our many plane trips back home. Yesterday is the anniversary we celebrate the most - Brother Sister Day. It marked the 5 year anniversary of JM's arrival home and meeting his sister.

We stole the idea of Brother Sister Day from my former colleague Carita, who each year celebrates that day with her brother who was adopted at a young age. Even though they are in their late 30s/early 40s, those siblings spend time together each year. I can only hope the same for our kids.

We spend nine hours in the car yesterday returning from our vacation, so the official celebration of Brother Sister Day is happening today. This morning Keith set up our adoption highlight video for the kids to watch over breakfast. I had forgotten how small and young JM was! Later they want to head to Skyzone (an indoor trampoline place - wish us luck :) and then to early dinner.

It hasn't always been easy in the last 5 years, but it's been awesome. JM is an energetic, athletic, bright, musical, funny kid. He has made great strides in all areas, culminating this year with a fantastic first grade experience.

For all of you waiting ... I know it's frustrating, disappointing and emotional. But know the day will come when you meet your child and things will never be the same.

All the best,

The Layman Family
